Types of Noun


In previous lesson we have learned that  A noun is a word used for a person, place, thing, creature or idea.

پچھلے سبق میں ہم سبھوں نے جانا کہ اسم (Noun) وہ  لفظ جس سے کسی شخش، جگہ، مذھب، مخلوق، چیز وغیرہ کا نام سمجھا جاۓ اسے ہم اسم (Noun) کہتے ہیں.

Proper Noun 

Names of people or places such as your name, your friend’s name, your parents’ name or the name of your town and country are special naming words. These words are called proper nouns. Special naming words or proper nouns always  always begin with a capital letter. (Theidioms.com)
Names of the person or places or animals or town or city or country are special naming words. These are called Proper Noun. Proper Noun always begins with a capital letter. 
 اسم معرفہ
وہ لفظ جس سے کسی خاص جگہ، سخص، جانور، شہر، دریا، پہاڑ، یا ملک وغیرہ کا نام ظاہر ہو اسے اسم معرفہ کہتے ہیں. ایسے اسم کی شروعات ہمیشہ بڑے حروف سے ہوتی ہیں. 
Example:
Name of Person: Jamal, Kalam, Abul, Sahil, Samar, Qamar
Name of the Place: Kolkata, Dhanbad, Delhi, Durgapur
Name of the Day: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Friday
Name of the month: January, March, April, October
Name of the Mountain: Himalaya, Nangaparbat, Nilgiri, 
Name of the river: Ganga, Jamuna, Godavri, Amazon, Nile

Common Noun 

Common nouns are naming words that are common to people, places, things and animals etc. Common nouns do not define any particular person, place or thing. They are general names. So, they are not capitalized unless they begin a sentence.
 اسم نکرہ 
وہ اسم جس سے کسی عام چیز، جگہ، شخص، پہاڑ کا نام سمجھا جاۓ اسے Common Noun کہتے ہیں.
Example
 Name of person: boy, friend, doctor,brother, sister,woman
Name of place: village, school, road,building, house
Name of animals: dog cat, lion, cow, ox, monkey tiger, pigion

Material Noun

It is the name of material from which different things can be made 
اسم مادہ 
کسی بھی مادے کے نامکو ہم اسم مادہ کہتے ہیں. 
Example
water, air, Silver, gold, iron, Copper, Coal, sunlight, Rain, Earth, salt, eggs, meat, honey, milk, silk, leather,  wool, food, oil, wood,  coffee, medicine, tea, rubber, perfume, cheese, brick, cement, butter, cloth.

Collective Noun

A collective noun is a word that refers to a group. Collective nouns are singular in form but plural in sense. For purposes of agreement, collective nouns can be singular or plural, depending on how they are used in a sentence.
Collective nouns used as one unit take a singular verb; collective nouns that indicate many units take a plural verb.
اسم جمع 
وہ اسم جس سے ایک ہی طرح کی گروہ، جماعت، یا مجموعہ کا علم ہوتا ہو اس کو Collective Noun کہتے ہیں. ترتیب کے اعتبار سے یہ جمع کی شکل میں ہوتی ہے لیکن اسکا استعمال جملے میں واحد کا احساس کرتا ہے. مزید جملے کے اعتبار سے اسے جمع کی شکل میں بھی استعمال کیا جاتا ہے. 
 جملے میں اسم جمع اکائی کا احساس دلاتا ہو تو verb واحد کا استعمال کیا جاتا ہے. اگر جملے میں اسم جمع مجموعہ کا احساس دلاتا ہو تو verb جمع کا استعمال کیا جاتا ہے.

Abstract Noun 

Abstract nouns are nouns that cannot be touched or seen. These are intangible things. They can be a feeling or a thought or even a quality. Abstract nouns are always treated as singular.
اسم کیفیت 
وہ لفظ جس سے کسی چیز کی خاصیت، حالت، کیفیت، یہ صفت وغیرہ کا علم ہوتا ہو اسے Abstract Noun کہتے ہیں.

Countable Nouns

Countable nouns are nouns that can be counted. They have a singular and a plural form and can be used with a number.

 قابل شمار اسم 

وہ لفظ جسے شمار کیا جا سکتا ہے اسے قابل شمار اسم کہتے ہیں. ایسے اسم واحد کے شکل میں ہوتے ہیں اور جمع کی شکل میں ہوتے ہیں.

Examples: car, cars, desk, desks, cup, cups, house, houses,  bike, bikes, eye, eyes,  butterfly, butterflies.

                    

Uncountable Nouns

Uncountable nouns are nouns that cannot be counted. Therefore, they only have a singular form. They have no plural forms. These words are thought of as wholes rather than as parts. These are some times called Mass Nouns.
غیر شمار اسم 
ایسے اسم جس کی شمار نہیں کی جاسکتی اسے uncountable noun کہتے ہیں.  یہ اسم واحد کی شکل میں موجود ہوتی ہیں. ان کا کوی جمع شکل نہیں ہیں.
 
Substances:  paper, wood, plastic, hair, mud, grass
Liquids: milk, oil, juice, water, mixture, 
Gases: air, oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen
Abstract ideas: happiness, sorrow, time, information.
